3 Tips on Helping Children Beat Seasonal Allergies

Spring is definitely a season to look forward to. The warmer weather, budding flowers, and the realization that Summer is just around the corner. But to some people, Spring also brings allergies, seasonal allergies. Just when we thought that winter colds were long gone – we start hearing sneezes and sniffles. We want to offer our kids relief so finding a solution that can help is essential. What are some tips to help children with their allergies?

Spring Cleaning

Allergy season is a great time to do a thorough Spring cleaning. It is a great time to change out your air filters. Those air filters trap pet dander, pollen, dust mites, and so much more. When Spring time comes we have more allergens in the air which stay trapped in the filter. Changing the filter regularly will help avoid build-up. Dusting around the house also help with any allergens that may have entered your home. Vacuuming with a HEPA filter helps in watching all those allergens that cling to our shoes.

Know what triggers their allergies

Allergy testing may be exactly what your child needs in order to understand the triggers. I know exactly what my son is allergic to because of his allergy test. We found out all his allergies are environmental. The allergy test was such a game-changer for us because we learned what triggered his allergies and when they occurred – always around Spring/Summer. Once we knew what affected his allergies we avoided certain types of grass and tried to stay away from certain trees/plants. Be sure to check the weather report for pollen and mold counts.

At the end of the day, we just want our kids to feel happy and healthy. I am constantly reading up on ways to help my son coop with his allergies. There are definitely days that are better than others but we’ve learned how to deal with it. I always make sure to talk to my son about what to look for and if he feels anything to let the nurse in school know or to advise mom or dad. He has dealt with allergies since he was an infant so he is really good at changing his sheets because of his dust mite allergy or making sure to wear long pants if he knows he’s going to be on grass.

  1. It’s strange that I saw this, my kid woke up with a stuffy nose and I don’t even think he has allergies…I wonder now..

  2. Oh, I wish I knew how to beat allergies. They seem to be a recurring theme in my family. The best advice I have is try to prevent them (whether through meds, shots or homeopathic remedies) rather than waiting for them to hit. Once that congestion & runny nose & eyes hits…yuck.

  3. My primary allergy tip is to try to eat as many local fruit and veggies as possible. Not only are they good for you, but eating locally has really helped our bodies become more “immune” to the allergens in our area.

  4. I have to change the air filters in our home often. I also take allergy medicine in the spring.

  5. My allergy tip is to drink plenty of water and get plenty of vitamin c. Wash bed spreads weekly and vacuum daily to keep allergens away.

  6. My boys take over the counter medication daily to deal with their allergies. We try to keep the carpet vacuumed and their linens clean also.

  7. We encourage hand wash like crazy & change outside clothes. Most importantly no shoes in the house.

  8. I keep benidryl handy at all times in the spring and summer, the cream especially in the summer, my daughter welts with mosquito bites

  9. We take our shoes off at the door and keep the windows closed. We usually take allergy medicine to help.

  10. Wash hands often and change clothes after being out. We also use a cool mist humidifier to help with the sniffles and sneezes.

  11. I have terrible allergies. My allergy doctor says to not open your bedroom window during allergy season as you are letting all the pollen in your bed. Allergies are 10 times worse at night, so I take my medicine between 3-5 pm.

  12. We wash our hands and face after we come inside. Changing clothes and leaving windows closed sometimes helps too.

  13. Now that spring is finally here I like to open the windows and dust and air out the house. Are allergies are worse in the Spring.
