Guys, I’m going to have a 1st grader this school year. A 1st grader! I cannot believe my little princess is already in elementary school. Kindergarten was a big transition for her, as you can imagine! Being in school all day, homework, and limited play time is definitely something she was not used to. Kindergarten is also where she was introduced to sight words and learning how to read. It definitely was a big change for her but she was excited to learn.
We made trips to the library and bookstore to pick up I Can Read! early reader series. The series is organized into color-coded levels to make it easy to identify which books are appropriate for your child. You can read all about the levels by visiting the website.
Last year, my daughter was reading the level My First: Shared Reading. Now that she is heading to 1st grade we’re moving up to Level 1: Beginning Reading. Don’t miss our giveaway at the end of this post for your own chance to win a set of I Can Read! books!
Even though it is Summer, we’ve been reviewing sight words and reading every single night. My daughter’s teacher gave all the parents a checklist with tips on things to practice during Summer break. Practicing sight words and reading are top on the list. The I Can Read! Level 1: Beginning Reading books incorporate many of the sight words my daughter has learned and will learn so I decided to create some fun coloring sight word flashcards.

Materials Needed to Make Your Own Coloring Sight Words Flash Cards
- Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, or any editing programs
- Digital Stamp Clipart
- Printer
Directions:
Step 1: Open Powerpoint. Use a blank slide, set the slide to 8.5 x 11, and change to portrait.
Step 2: Click on shapes and select the rectangle with the rounded corners (if that is what you prefer). Change the background to white and size it to 2.6 Height x 3.75 Width. Duplicate the shape so you can fix multiple on one sheet. I was able to fix 5 rectangles on one slide.
Step 3: Using the Word Art feature, select the outline option and type the sight word. Change the line color to black and the fill to white. Repeat the process for all the words and place them in the rectangle.
Step 4: Add any clip art or background to each rectangle, if you desire. Repeat for each flash card or duplicate.
Step 5: Print on cardstock paper, then cut using scissors.

I created the flashcards to go with her I Can Read! Level 1: Beginning Reading series. One of the best parts of the series is that the books feature familiar characters which make her all the more excited to read them! My daughter enjoys reading Pinkalicious, Fancy Nancy, Biscuit, Paddington, and The Berenstain Bears. I remember reading books with some of these characters when I was a little girl so it brings me so much joy to see her enjoying them too!
Her reading has improved significantly since we started reading the Level 1 books. Sometimes she’ll read words and sentences she sees at the mall or outside while driving. She carries her little flash cards everywhere she goes. Add a hole in the corner of the flash cards then add a book ring to keep them together. It makes it so easy to travel with.
The I Can Read! book series makes it easy for parents to find the right level for their child and characters that will get them excited. You can learn even more about the series by watching this YouTube video!

Love the printables and the books! So important to encourage kids to read!
These flash cards are great! My daughter is going into kindergarten. These would be very helpful. She would love to color them, I think it would make her want to use them!
We love reading at our house. My twins are really into Nancy Drew books right now. We’ve also read some other fun books. My daughter loved the Fancy Nancy books when she was younger.
Yes we do use flash cards at home. My children enjoy the Little Critter book series, as well as Eric Carle books.
I love the idea of adding these to a ring for easy flipping through. Getting kids to color their own flashcards is so clever!
These cards look fantastic. I love that there is another step involved with them coloring them in for more practice with how they are spelled.
These are great! I love that they can color in their flash cards.
I am loving these! My cousin teaches English to children and this would be the perfect tool to learn words while having fun. I hope she’ll join the giveaway and look into getting these for her classes. 🙂
We like Pete the Cat
My son likes any of the Dr. Seuss books. We have used flash cards.
What a neat idea, I never thought of making these like you did above. My youngest is going to kindergarten, so something like this would be really great for him. My second youngest is going to 2nd grade, this would be fun for her as well. I wish I saw this sooner, would of been great for summer break, but it’s almost over now.
She really likes the Biscuit books.
We are big readers- my son loves any books with Disney characters and Little Golden Books
My son absolutely loves the book “Ten in the Bed” and has memorized it word for word.
My grandsons favorite book is Walter the Farting Dog. It’s a great book!
I have used flash cards with my son since he was one year old. He is 3 and is reading at a one grade level. He loves to read and be read to. He has a wonderful imagination. I have always kept patient with him and never pushed him. He has just loved to learn! And what makes him happy makes me happy.
