Make it a craft day with this fun colorful canvas surprise art project. Kids can pick whatever paint colors and design they want!
This Summer will be the first time my kids will be home with me, so I am planning all kinds of fun activities and crafts. My kids usually go to Summer camp but since I am home I can plan a bunch of fun stuff to do with my kids. If you have kids that stay at home for the summer, this Colorful Canvas Surprise Art project will be a hit! Use disposable plates from Dixie to save time on doing dishes plus they are perfect for craft projects!
The craft art project is fun for both of my kids (5-years old and 9-years old). I let them get as creative as they want! Let them pick the colors they want so it matches their room or so they can give it as a gift.
Colorful Canvas Surprise Art
Supplies:
- Canvas
- Variety of acrylic paint (white is required)
- Cutout of a heart, name, letters (anything you want)
- paintbrushes
- Water
- Dixie paper plates
Step 1: Using the paper plate, squirt different colors (leaving space between each) on it. Grab a paintbrush and start painting about an inch of color. Keep switching colors as you go so that you have a multi-color layer on the canvas. Repeat the process until the end. Allow drying.
Step 2: Lay the cutout on top of the rainbow of colors. If you prefer you can put a layer of Mod Podge to adhere the cut out to the canvas (or an easier way is to cut out the design with a cutting machine using vinyl or contact paper and press it to the canvas).
Step 3: Carefully paint the white paint on top of everything. You may have to do a few coats to get a nice right white. Allow plenty of time to dry between each layer.
Step 4: Once dry, carefully remove the paper/vinyl with tweezers or weeding tool. It should reveal a beautiful rainbow artwork!
Doing all these crafts definitely works up an appetite! I like to make cleaning up as easy as possible so I use Dixie plates to minimize dishes! My kids enjoy their lunch and snacks on Dixie plates and I have no shame admitting it. Who wants to be slaving away in the kitchen during Summer vacation? I surely don’t!
