School officially started today! Back to school is always an exciting time for me, not sure how my son feels about it though. Ha. My son started 3rd grade today and it amazes me how big he’s gotten. He has quite the personality and tells you exactly how he feels about things. His wardrobe for example, has drastically changed. Gone are the days that I can dress him up in matching outfits. Now he prefers athletic apparel – basketball shorts, performance t-shirts, and name brand sneakers. Oh and we can’t forget the long socks! It is no surprise that his favorite store is DICK’s Sporting Goods® which is exactly where I can find everything he needs for back to school – clothing, sneakers, backpacks, sports gear, and so much more.

Tips when Back to School Shopping with Boys:

1. Have them make a list of what they need. Before heading out on your shopping adventure with your little man, let them create a list of what they need and/or want. It’ll help them focus once they get into the store. My son is at an age where he knows what he wants. He was able to tell me exactly what he wanted to get. It made the entire experience so much easier!

 2. Let them pick what they like. I’m all for individuality. Let them pick a few items they like and just throw some items you think may look good on them. My son tends to value my opinion (because let’s face I’m always right – ha!) so I like to throw in some essentials that he may not think he needs but I know he needs. For example, basic t-shirts and solid color socks.

3. Let them try it on. I’ve learned to take the time to have my kids try on the clothes they picked. There have been so many times the items were too big or too small. It can sometimes be a challenge to get my son to go shopping with me so this avoids any unnecessary trips back to the store.

The trip to DICK’s Sporting Goods® was easier than I expected. My son knew exactly what he wanted – some Nike high top sneakers with a Nike outfit. The best part? We found everything he wanted quickly and easily! He was torn between the Under Armour gear as well but ended up with Nike. The huge selection of athletic apparel made it an ideal place to look for back to school shopping.

  1. You are so right about letting boys pick their own clothing. Your tips for when to back to school shopping with boys is spot on. I dread each time I have to take the boys out, because it is a hard day. Turns out if they pick what they like and they just LOOK around, things go much easier. We tend to head to sports stores first to ‘break the ice’

  2. These are great tips. I have two girls, so I don’t know much about shopping for boys. Love Dicks sporting goods though.

  3. School already started here so I already had everything I need. But I can always use a gift card to Dick’s Sporting Goods because sports are coming up soon

  4. I have no boys, but back to school shopping with girls is a nightmare. I have 3 and they all have such different tastes in clothes and shoes.

  5. Having them try it on is so important. I swear my kids used to change sizes every day!It made shopping so difficult.

  6. I go shopping as soon as we are out of school and get the supplies ready..I watch for shoe sales and coupons for the shirts as soon as they become available..

  7. I don’t know any boys that are going back to school soon, but these are great tips! If I knew one, I would definitely take this into account. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  8. Haha great tips!!!! I have a girl, but all my friends have boys and they are all about the Jordan’s! It’s Jordan and Nike everything for them!

  9. Dick’s Sporting Goods sounds like a great place to shop for back to school with the boys. I do know that my boys were pickier than I was when I was school shopping years ago. Thanks for sharing the your experience and the giveaway.

  10. Great tips! i have 4 boys. we all went back to school shopping on Monday and I was really shocked it was such a success! We don’t have a Dick’s near us but i wish we did!

  11. My best tip is to have the child involved in the decision making of what to buy but not buy them everything they want or something inappropriate

  12. These are great tips! Back to school shopping is so fun, maybe not so much for the boys though haha! Getting them things they like, like Nike – is so great for them!

  13. I made the mistake of going to get my son measured for shoes this week and it was manic because all the kids where getting their school shoes for the year. He doesn’t start school till next year but I am already dreading this time of year
