5 ways to beat Summer boredom when kids are home

I am sure you’ve heard it a few times since schools let out – “I’m bored”. My kids go to Summer camp during the week but on the weekends, I hear it at least once a day. My kids love to be active and constantly want to be on the go. I had to get creative in ways to keep them entertained, here are 5 Ways to Beat Summer Boredom when kids are home with you.

5 Ways to Beat Summer Boredom

1. Video GamesChristian gaming on the XBox One

Video games are for everyone. There are so many choices. We’re a gaming family – we own an XBox One, PS4, and Wii U. We even have some of the retro systems (Super Nintendo, N64, and Genesis). We limit video game time for our oldest son because he can stay there for hours. I’m not kidding. Here are some of his favorite video games right now (he is 9 years old) – Cars 3: Driven to Win, LEGO Worlds, and LEGO Dimensions. Video games are a great way to get involved with the kids with a little friendly competition. My daughter is 5 years old and can play an awesome round of Splatoon on Wii U. The game is awesome! We have so much fun playing together. I love the bond we share. There are some many different genres of games that there is always something for everyone. Many of these video games allow for more than 2 players at a time which is a plus when you have multiple children.

2. Traditional Board Games & Cards

Board games are a must have in any household, in my opinion! I grew up playing Connect 4, Trouble, Monopoly, Sorry!, etc. My love of board games was passed on to my little ones. We can play a mean game of Monopoly! We like to play UNO and “I Declare War” games. This is another activity where multiple people can play. The more the merrier!

3. Arts & CraftsArts and crafts

Arts & crafts never get old. My daughter enjoys anything with paint so she tends to be entertained for quite some times. She comes up with these elaborate stories about her paintings. I love that she has an active imagination! The most popular have been making slime! Doing cards for different occasions was a hit too. I took out my stamps, inks, and cardstock and we made different cards.

4. Go Outside

outdoor play

Spending some time outside riding bikes, rollerblading, using the scooter, park, or even the pool are always fun ideas for kids. Plus, it’ll wear them out. My kids end up going to bed earlier when we spend time outdoors. I like throwing the football around with my son or playing soccer with my daughter. It keeps me active and healthy – a win-win!

5. Have a Movie Day

Movies are always a fun way for kids to stay entertained. Some of our favorite movies this Summer has been The Sandlot, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Despicable Me (all of them), Moana, Descendants, Trolls, and Spiderman. We make popcorn and do a little daytime slumber party. They love it!

I try to be involved in all the activities when I can. Sometimes I have deadlines and can’t play with them all day but the majority of the time they have my attention. It also helps keep the arguing to a minimum when you have two outspoken kids, like mine. Makes me sad that Summer vacation is almost over but these ideas work great for any time of the year.

What are some of your boredom busters for our kids?
