Coupons may seem overwhelming for a beginner but I assure you that once you familiarize yourself with the different coupon policies you will quickly get the hang of it.

1. In order to get some of the deals you will need to get the newspaper every Sunday. For example, I get the Miami Herald, Sun Sentinel, El Nuevo Herald, and El Sentinel (a free newspaper). You can subscribe to El Sentinel here. (The form is in Spanish but you can use your browser translator). It is recommended to get at least two newspapers (for those BOGO deals!).

  • You can also find coupons on products (which we call peelies). Sometimes in front of or near a certain product the store will have these little machines that spit out coupons for that one product (which we call blinkies). Publix also has coupons in the front entrance (in the turnstile area) which are called the “Green Advantage flyer” (may or may not be green) and the “Yellow Advantage Flyer” (may or may not be yellow). They also will sometimes have coupon booklets which may be in the same area or you may have to ask customer service.

2. You may notice some of my post have (RP 3/29) or (SS 1/20). RP stands for Red Plum and SS stands for Smart Source. These are the coupons that come inside the newspaper you buy on Saturday or Sunday.

Publix is definitely one of my favorite stores to shop because their coupon policy is very generous. Publix allows one manufacturer coupon and one competitor coupon per item. Your competitor will vary – it will be based on that locations competition. For example  my local Publix will take coupons from Target, Winn-Dixie, Whole Foods, Doris’, Albertsons, and Sedano’s. If you are not sure what competitor coupons your Publix takes just check with the customer service desk. Below is the Publix coupon policy:

Publix accepts manufacturers’ coupons (limit one per item), Publix coupons (originals only—no copies), valid Internet coupons, and coupons from nearby competitors identified by each Publix store. (Competitor names are posted at each Publix store.) We will accept coupons from competing pharmacies for prescriptions only. We will not accept percent-off-items or percent-off-total-order coupons. We will only accept coupons for identical merchandise we sell. Acceptance is subject to any restrictions on the coupon, and we reserve the right to limit quantities. Manager approval is needed for individual coupons above $5.00. For a buy-one-get-one free (BOGO) offer, each item is considered a separate sale. We will accept a manufacturer’s coupon and either a Publix or a competitor coupon on the same item. Dollars-off-total-order coupons will be limited to one Publix and one competitor coupon per order. The order total must be equal to or greater than the total purchase requirements indicated on the coupon(s) presented.

If an item is buy one, get one (BOGO) you can use up to four coupons for that item (two manufacturers and two competitor or Publix coupon). For example, if Ragu pasta sauce is on sale for $3.99 BOGO and you have a manufacturer’s coupon for $1/1 Ragu pasta sauce and a Publix(or Target) coupon for $1/1 Ragu pasta sauce – you would have $4 off Ragu pasta sauce. Hence, making both items free!

Target is another great store that allows the use of one manufacturers coupon and one Target coupon per item (unless it is prohibited by the coupon).

•Target accepts one Manufacturer Coupon and one Target Coupon for the same item (unless prohibited by either coupon).
•We reserve the right to accept, refuse, or limit the use of any coupon.
•Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day (unless otherwise noted on coupon).
•All valid coupons should be presented to the cashier during checkout.
•Item purchased must match the coupon description (brand, size, quantity, color, flavor, etc.).
•Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied.
•We can’t give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase value of the item.
•All applicable sales taxes are paid by the guest at the full value of the item.
•These guidelines apply to all coupons accepted at Target (Color Checkout Coupons, Internet Coupons, •Mobile Coupons, Mailed Coupons, Coupons from Newspapers and Magazines, etc.)

Target regularly sends mobile coupons to those who wish to receive coupons to their phone. Just visit here or by texting COUPONS to 827438 (TARGET). Target also has Target coupons on their website. Be sure to check the site often as they frequently add or remove coupons.

Target's Printable Grocery Coupons

I shop the most at Publix and Target since the savings is maximized by the ability to use multiple coupons. Winn-Dixie and Walmart have great prices but it is rare that I shop at those two store regularly. I visit Publix and Target on a weekly basis (just ask my husband!).
