Do you suffer from adult Acne? You are not alone, adult acne is a lot more common than people think. Simple changes in your diet can help significantly!
Adult acne is pretty common, I know because I suffer from hormonal acne and I’m 33 years old! The myth that acne only occurs in teen boys and girls during puberty is not true. But there are ways to improve your acne-prone skin with the foods you eat, reducing stress levels, being aware of the ingredients in products you use, cleaning your makeup brushes and pillowcases regularly, and drinking lots of water! Switching to a dairy-free diet helped my skin significantly! An easy switch to Silk products made it so easy to still enjoy the foods I love!
5 Ways to Improve Your Acne-Prone Skin
Eating Right
What we put in our body affects our skin. Dairy products have been known to aggravate acne-prone skin especially if you suffer from hormonal acne. Eating products that are dairy-free can make a big difference in your skin. Silk Vanilla Almondmilk Dairy-Free Yogurt Alternative is the perfect alternative to regular dairy-based yogurt. When making smoothies and eating cereal, I use Silk Almondmilk or Coconutmilk. Eliminating dairy has significantly reduced the number of breakouts I get. Eating more “green” is another great way for your body to absorb healthy nutrients and vitamins that it needs.
Be Aware of Skin Product Ingredients
Those who suffer from acne-prone skin tend to have sensitivities to certain products. Buying skin products that contain fragrances may cause your skin some irritation. I tend to go with unscented products. Using more natural products will help your skin significantly – there is no need for those harsh chemicals. The products may cost a little bit more money but your skin will thank you! Certain makeup products contain pore-clogging ingredients so watch the ingredients listed on the bottle. The products should say “non-comedogenic” a fancy term for “it won’t clog your pores”. Wash your face two times a day with a good mild cleanser!
Reduce Stress Levels
It may not seem that stress causes acne but it does. Do you ever wonder why before a big meeting/presentation, test, or even a date you end up with a big ol’ pimple right in the middle of your forehead? Yup, it is stress. There are certain stress hormone receptors that make you produce more sebum which causes your pores to clog thus making you breakout. But we can help our stress levels by using certain techniques that will calm us. For example, medication and yoga, working out, and even just taking the time to read quietly for 30 mins. I learned that I get easily overwhelmed when I have a lot going on, so I started writing down my “to-do” list. Knowing what is happening has helped me reduce my stress levels significantly.
Cleaning makeup brushes and pillowcases regularly
Sometimes we get busy and forget about the importance of cleaning our makeup brushes but it is so important. Our brushes hold bacteria which then gets transferred to our face. Use a mild makeup brush cleaner and let it air dry on a clean paper towel. Our pillowcases also hold a lot of acne-causing bacteria. Switch out your pillowcases often, weekly if you can! I use a mild detergent to wash my sheets to avoid all the fragrances that some detergents have.
Drink A Lot of Water
Guys, water is so important for your overall health. Our bodies need water. Our skin needs water. I notice right away when I am slacking in the water department because my face starts to look dull and I may end up with a zit. There are apps now that let you set timers. What also helps me with my water consumption is having a big water bottle that I can refill right next to me at all times. If I’m leaving the house I’ll take it with me, that leaves me with no excuse!
There are so many elements involved when it comes to acne-prone skin. This year I did a drastic change in my diet. I pick dairy-free and greener products when I can. I pick-up Silk almondmilk or coconutmilk for all my milk needs at Walmart (found in the dairy aisle). Silk Almondmilk is used when I cook our meals and honestly, we do not taste a difference at all. Plus, it is perfect for those that need lactose-free products. If you want some recipe ideas using Silk products, visit the Silk hub website.
