The Holidays were always a special time for me because I knew my great grandmother would be spending the winter months with us. There are certain triggers in my daily life that make me remember the fond memories I had with her. The smells of certain scents, the sounds from certain songs, or the glimpse of someone’s sky blue eyes. Walking down the candle aisle at my local grocery story brought back one of my favorite memories of my abuela making Holiday cookies. The Glade® Frosted Cookie Party™ smelled just like my grandmother’s Polvorones or shortbread cookies. It is the perfect Christmas scent for baking some cookies for the Holidays.

I wanted to make the cookies exactly like my great grandmother made them. I got the recipe from her and got to work. The cookies are traditionally done with a piece of guava or sprinkles. My grandmother always made them with sprinkles – my favorite! I made a slight change by adding the powdered sugar because I thought it went well with the Glade® Frosted Cookie Party™. I lit the candle, played some holiday music and got to work! The candle smelled amazing and would work so well for a dessert exchange party or while baking cookies with your family. The light cream color of the candles goes well with any decorations.

Recipe to make Polvorones:
• 2 cups flour
• ½ cup shortening
• ½ cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
• ½ cup granulated sugar
• ½ tsp Vanilla extract
• ½ tsp almond extract
• Pinch of salt
• Powdered/Confectioner’s sugar
• Cookie sheet
• Parchment paper

1. Mix the ½ cup shortening and ½ cup room temperature unsalted butter in a mixer (it is best to use a paddle). Mix until it is blended well.
2. Slowly add the ½ cup of sugar
3. Slowly add the ½ tsp of Vanilla extract and almond extract
4. Add a pinch of salt
5. Add the flour in small batches while having the mixer on
6. The mixer should look like sand and feel soft
7. Grab your cookie sheet and Parchment paper
8. Grabbing small amounts of cookie dough form round balls
glade2 9. Depending on the size it should yield about 20 cookies.
10. Using your thumb press down with your thumb in the middle of your dough
glade3 11. Place in the oven on 350 for 12-15 mins.
12. The cookies should look slightly browned
13. Remove them from the oven once done and sprinkle the powdered sugar all over them

The cookies are soft but with a slight crunch. They have hints of vanilla and almond. Enjoy with a glass of milk! The cookies bring back so many fond memories and I hope I can do the same for my children. I told my kids stories about my time in Puerto Rico and how we would enjoy the Holidays. It was such a wonderful time bonding with my family while enjoy the smells and taste of cookies. It really was a #GladeHolidayMood! What fond memories do you have?
