Create sight word flashcards using the Silhouette Cameo. Kids can trace the sight word or spelling word on one side and have the solid word on the other. Perfect to take on the go with some dry erase markers!
My daughter is in Kindergarten and learning her sight words has been a priority in our house. She gets weekly spelling tests to make sure she can identify and write each of the words on her own. If you have a Kindergartener you probably study sight words with your little one. I wanted a fin way to make practicing the words more fun. So I decided to create sight word flashcards using my Silhouette Cameo. My daughter picked the cardstock paper she wanted and I used the print and cut feature in Silhouette Studio. Create Sight Word Flashcards
Supplies needed to make Sight Word Flashcards:
- Silhouette Cameo
- 8.5 x 11 Cardstock or Scrapbook paper
- Printer (I used this one)
- Scotch Laminator Machine
- Thermal Laminator pouches
- Flashcard template (download it here – PDF or SVG)
Directions:
1. Open Silhouette Studio and set your mat size to 8.5 x 11 inches (Click page setup – size – Letter). On the same Page Setup area, click to turn on Registration marks. We’ll be printing and cutting. Adjust the Registration marks by increasing the thickness and inset.
2. Select the rectangle tool and size it to 3.25 x 4.5. You should be able to fit 4 rectangles in an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. Type out the sight word or spelling word that your child needs to learn. You will have to copy the template of the blank flashcards to add more words.
3. If you want to take it a step further, you can add a trace feature for each of the words by downloading the free KG Primary Dots font from DaFont or Letters for Learners Font Family from CreativeMarket. Since the card will be laminated you can use a dry erase marker to have your child trace each word.
4. Once the words are typed and placed within each of the flashcard templates, send it to print.
5. Load the printed paper on your Silhouette Cameo mat. Be sure to set your material to cardstock and only printing the outline. You don’t want the words to be cut just the flash cards. Repeat with each flashcard and trace card (if you are doing it).
6. Using a glue stick or tape, match the word with the traced word and glue/tape them back to back. Repeat for all cards.
7. Grab your thermal laminator pouches (I used the 5.2 x 7.2-inch thermal laminating pouches) and place your flashcards neatly on the pouch. You can also use the 8.5 x 11 thermal laminator pouches – just add 4 flashcards to it. Pass it through the laminator machine one pouch at a time.
8. Cut the flashcards evenly and trim any excess around the card as needed. Your child is ready to enjoy their Sight word or spelling word flashcards that can be reused again and again!
My daughter has her own little pouch to hold her flashcards and dry erase markers neatly. I love that the flashcards of easy to clean up and will last a long time! I know she will have spelling tests for many, many years. Her reading and word recognition have improved significantly since we started using the flashcards. The best part is that we can take it on the go and practice anywhere.
The flash cards can be easily customized – pick your desired font, color, even paper! Make it fun by allowing your child to pick which paper they want their flashcards to be. You can even print the pattern you desire straight from the Silhouette studio when you do the print and cut feature.
