Make these delicious, crispy Plantain Chips in your Air Fryer! A quick easy recipe without all the oily mess!

Plantain chips – crispy, salty, and just plain delicious! Plantain chips (or mariquitas to some) are an absolute favorite snack of mine. I enjoy all the different varieties – the ones with lime are so good! The problem with plantains (maduros – yellow plantains or tostones – green plantains) is that they are fried in oil. I’ve really been trying to cut oily/fried food from my diet which means giving up many of my favorite Latino dishes, or so I thought! I’ve had an Air Fryer for close to 4 years and never thought to make plantain chips. But one day I received a box of green plantains so I decided to try it.

The Air Fryer plantain chips turned out great! There are a few things I’ll do differently but overall they were crispy, salty, and not oily at all! It was exactly what I wanted! Plus, no need to deal with an oily mess! I try very hard not to make a mess when I cook with oil but it still ends up everywhere.

Ingredients and supplies needed:

Directions:

  1. Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees. Cut the ends of the green banana. Peel the banana by slicing a line from the top to the bottom being very careful not to pierce the inside. You want to cut on the skin.
  2. Using a slicer on the smallest setting, slice until you cannot slice anymore.
  3. In batches place the sliced green bananas inside the basket of the air fryer. (If you prefer to line it, you can but it is better to let it circulate). Have the slices laying flat at the bottom of the air fryer basket. Cook for about 10 minutes. If they need additional time leave on for another 5 minutes. If you see some of them are done, remove them and continue cooking the rest. Repeat step until all slices are cooked.
  4. Sprinkle the cooked plantain chips with salt to taste. Enjoy!

The plantain chips can be served with garlic sauce or dip. I do save these in a Ziploc bag (making sure to squeeze out all the air) if I have any leftover (it is rare as my family eats them all up!). Sometimes I make these as a side dish when I make burgers. They are also great as an appetizer! Plus, you can enjoy without the guilt of eating greasy food.

Green plantains are delicious anyway you cook them – fried, boiled, or baked. They are seriously my go-to side dish for any meals I make for my family. They are also the main ingredient in mofongo, which is my absolute favorite Puerto Rican dish! YUM!

  1. What a great snack and healthy too without cooking them in grease. I am thinking that the green bananas I would buy would not be the same thing you are using…or are they? I just might have to get an air fryer!! Thanks for sharing with us at Create and Celebrate!!
