Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching which makes me think about how I met my husband. My husband and I met online, a typical millennial couple. In the beginning things always start off romantic but quickly get comfortable. Sometimes trying something new can make a big difference in spicing up a long-term relationship/marriage.

It all started on the computer. My dad works in the computing/technology industry so I was always surrounded with the latest gadgets. I had my very own computer in my room. I lived in a not so great part of New York in one of the boroughs in the Bronx. My parents tried to shelter me from the harsh realities of life in the ghetto. I knew there were bad influences all over me the moment I stepped out my apartment building in the South Bronx. Since I wasn’t allowed to be outside with my friends I resorted to the computer, a time where social media networks were popular. Chat rooms and IM’s were always up when I was home. I loved talking to people from all over the world. I was very active in social media.

My friends and I would meet up with people we met online. We always met in a public area, never alone. I never had that “connection” with the boys I did meet. One particular time, I got a notification from someone on a popular social media site for Latinos. The IM said, “I like your picture but I want to know more about you”. I was very vague in my profile descriptions and had a picture that wasn’t very clear. I responded to the IM to find out more about this person. Little did I know that that mysterious person would one day be the man that I love. We exchanged messages back and forth over the course of three days. I found out he was from Brooklyn (far from the Bronx), loved baseball, and had a nice sports car. We really hit it off and soon decided that we should meet. He was 2 years old than me and had already finished college. I was a Junior at a University in the city. We decided to meet a few weekends later. We had already began talking on the phone and I loved how educated he was. He had dreams and goals in life which was different than other boys my age.

I was so nervous and anxious to meet him. It is so much easier speaking to someone through a computer screen than seeing them face to face. I worried if he would like me, I worried that he wasn’t the same person as the picture, so many things running through my mind. I knew if I didn’t try I would regret it. He picked me up from my apartment building in his white mustang with flowers. Aw. We had plans to go to the movies in Brooklyn at one of his favorite movie theaters. It was an instant connection. I got this wonderful feeling like it was meant to be, that I was at the right place. Everything came so easy for us. There was never that awkward moment. Our conversations were always easy, engaging, and fun. I was very shy and he made me feel so at ease and confident. After our wonderful date, he dropped me off home but called me immediately after to ask if I would be his girlfriend. I said yes, of course!

I still lived with my parents so I had a curfew that I had to follow but we were pretty much inseparable. We would explore the city together. We would go to Coney Island boardwalk or sit on the beach. We sometimes would walk the Williamsburg Bridge to eat at one of our favorite hotdog places. It was wonderful. My parents met him a few months later and I met his family. I was 21 years old but my parents were still very over protective. Before my Senior year of college my parents moved to Florida and left me the apartment. My best friend and I were roommates. I loved the freedom – I had my own car, I worked two jobs, and had an awesome boyfriend. He played baseball every weekend and I would often go to his games. I got to know all his friends and he got to know mine. We went to theme parks and night clubs. It was just fun and carefree.

Our relationship did get to the next level, less than two years later he proposed. He knew that I would be moving to Florida after I graduated from college and he didn’t want to lose me. Once I graduated I did leave to Florida and landed a job quickly. My fiance soon followed about 3 months later when I got an apartment for us. About six months later, we found out we were expecting our first child together. We were so excited and happy! Everything was falling into place. We welcomed our baby boy on July 23, 2008. We got married on May 2009. We had a little small party to celebrate our love. Life was looking great! We knew we wanted another baby and our son wanted a baby sister. His wish came true and we welcomed our daughter April 2012.
